Ryanair refund and compensation across the EU

Ryanair flies more passengers than any airline in Europe, so it also generates a lot of delays and cancellations. When your flight is disrupted you have two separate things to claim. One is your money back or a free re-route. The other is fixed cash compensation under EU law. They are not the same thing, and Ryanair will not always volunteer both. This guide walks you through claiming each one directly. Ryanair itself tells passengers to skip the claims firms that pocket up to 40 percent, and that is exactly right. Go direct and you keep every cent.

Your rights

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 covers any flight departing an EU airport, plus flights into the EU on an EU carrier like Ryanair. If your flight is cancelled, you can choose a full refund of the unused ticket, paid within 7 days, or a re-route to your destination at no extra cost (Article 8). For delays of 5 hours or more you can also abandon the trip and get a refund. On top of that, fixed compensation applies if the flight was cancelled with less than 14 days notice, or you arrived 3 or more hours late, and the cause was within Ryanair's control rather than an extraordinary circumstance such as ATC strikes or severe weather. The amounts are set by distance: 250 euro for flights up to 1,500 km, 400 euro for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km and intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, and 600 euro for other flights over 3,500 km. While you wait, Article 9 entitles you to meals, refreshments and, if needed, hotel accommodation. Compensation is paid in cash, by electronic bank transfer, bank order or cheque. A travel voucher can only be used with your signed agreement, so you do not have to accept one.

Step by step

  1. 1Gather your booking reference, boarding passes and the dates and times. Note when Ryanair told you about any cancellation, because the 14-day rule decides whether compensation is owed. Keep receipts for any food, transport or hotel you paid for during the disruption.
  2. 2Open the EU261 claim form in the Ryanair Help Centre (help.ryanair.com). Use it to request both your refund or re-route expenses and your compensation. Submit it under your own name so the payment comes straight to you with nothing deducted.
  3. 3State plainly what you want: the distance-based compensation figure, a refund of the unused flight, and reimbursement of any care costs Ryanair failed to cover. Attach your receipts. Ryanair aims to process claims within 10 working days, though payment can take longer.
  4. 4If Ryanair refuses, blames extraordinary circumstances without proof, or goes quiet for around 6 weeks, escalate to the national enforcement body in the country where the flight departed. For cross-border help, contact your nearest European Consumer Centre through the ECC-Net.

What they'll say, and your comeback

The delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances, so no compensation is due.

Comeback, Ask Ryanair to specify the circumstance in writing and prove it could not have been avoided with all reasonable measures. Technical faults inherent in normal operation, crew rostering and knock-on delays from earlier Ryanair flights are generally not extraordinary. If they cannot substantiate it, the compensation stands.

We have offered you a voucher or travel credit for the disruption.

Comeback, Under Article 7(3), a voucher can only replace cash with your signed agreement. You are entitled to decline it and ask for payment by electronic bank transfer instead. A refund of the ticket is also reimbursed to your original payment method, not credit, unless you actively agree otherwise.

Your flight only arrived a couple of hours late, below the threshold.

Comeback, The threshold is measured by arrival time at your final destination, not departure. If the doors opened 3 or more hours after the scheduled arrival, compensation is due. Check the actual arrival time logged, not the boarding time.

FAQ

Can I claim both a refund and compensation for the same flight?

Yes. They are separate rights under EU261. The refund returns your ticket money for a flight you did not take. Compensation is a fixed sum for the disruption itself. Receiving care, a re-route or a refund does not cancel your right to compensation.

How far back can I claim against Ryanair?

EU261 does not set a single deadline. The time limit depends on the national law that applies to your claim, and it ranges from around 2 years up to 6 in some countries. Claim as soon as you can, but do not assume an older disruption is automatically out of time.
