An estimate. You can reclaim if the perks were not explained, you could not use them, or it was added without consent.

Not sure it is worth the effort? The official FCA and ombudsman complaints data shows UK banks upheld nearly six in ten complaints in the first half of 2025, with current accounts the most complained-about product of all. A complaint is well worth making.

Questions

What is a packaged bank account?+

An account that charges a monthly fee, usually £10 to £20, in return for perks like travel insurance, breakdown cover or phone insurance. If the perks were not explained, you could not actually use them, or it was added without your say-so, the fees may be reclaimable.

How far back can I claim?+

Often years. You complain to the bank first, and if they reject you, the Financial Ombudsman Service reviews it for free. Successful claims usually return the fees with 8% interest.
